Our next Vendor Spotlight from Joshua Albanese Photography shines on Patty Kudlacz with the Chicago-based wedding design and wedding planning company, Fairy Godmothers. We had the pleasure to work Rob and Patty Boysen’s wedding with her last year, and love, love, loved the florals (and not just because I love pink). The peonies were perfectly petally and the greenery very lush. The Fairy Godmothers also go above and beyond the standard florist responsibilities and are more than happy to help with any needs on a couple’s wedding day – literally, fairy godmothers. We are definitely looking forward to working with her again this summer!

Tell us a little about what you do.
I like to say that I create everything visual for an event. Of course, flowers, invitations, favors and draping. But also the unusual things; like getting goldfish for the kids table centerpieces, locating candy with bible verses printed on the wrappers, collecting antiques plates to incorporate into a vintage design. Once I even created mini bridal veils for two cats that were part of a ceremony!
How long have you been in business?
This will be my 14th year!
What inspired you to start your business?
For me it was the creativity. Creating something beautiful to celebrate life’s greatest moments. I originally thought of doing intimate cocktail parties and dinner parties, but soon it just grew!
What is your favorite thing about your business?
I feel very honored to be a part of a bride and groom’s special day. I actually just love to make a vision or dream come true.
Was there a defining moment when you knew you picked the right career path?
Being one of THE KNOT‘s best wedding vendors,(2011 and 2012) two years in a row felt great …that all my efforts have paid off and that people are very happy with my work!
When you built your business what style would you say you built it around? (i.e. classic,
I like to think I am a bit of a chameleon … that I can adapt to what my clients want and create their sense of style, while bringing their vision to life. In a very real way, it is not at all about me and what I like.
When working with people how do you help bring the vision for the event to life?
I start with an extensive consultation that really delves into what the bride and groom envision. I work very hard to be a good listener. I ask a lot of questions, so that I fully understand. I just love when they present me with a challenge. I do anywhere from 35 to 45 weddings a year and no more than two in any given weekend so that I can keep artistic control.
Where do you go for inspiration? (i.e. blogs, magazines)
Everywhere!!! I was at Disney World many years ago and I found myself sketching and snapping pictures of things that inspired me. My family was ready to send me home if I did not start joining them on all the rides!!!
Is there anything else you want people to know about you and your business?
The other thing that makes Fairy Godmothers different from most florists is that we offer a lot of extra day –of –coordination. We do not charge extra for this service. We pin all the boutonnieres and cue the musicians, and line up the bridal party. We come prepared with a whole basket of “tools” to assist in last minute emergencies … It is just how we like to do it. After all who wouldn’t want a fairy godmother at their wedding!
